Well the thing is, both countries are conciderably dirty at this point. But Russia has a lot of shortcomings that USA presently does not. For one thing, the percentage of middle class in Russia is no more than 13%, while in USA it's well above 40% (at least). This says a lot about the state people live in.
Second of all, people in Russia are apolitic and apathic by inheritance - the myth of "stability" is what makes them sit on their butts and not even try to change things they are unhappy about. In USA you guys might be overreacting and overplaying, but in the end it all suggests extreme interest of citizens in their country's politics, which results in better controlled environment. You won't stay blind to things my people is.
Well I could go on for a long time really. And I'm for one glad that I was born and live in Moscow, because, aside a few chosen cities, life in other Russian regions is terrible.
