The point is that 90% of your posts are entirely unnecessary and insitigative.

The planet looks good. Maybe sharpening it a little...
Also, I don't currently like that smoke effect you got going there, but maybe that'll change untill the final version.

That was just an idea, I have it mostly covered now. Helped me track the flow of things anyways.

    Second update:
I've got the gears (there will be more of them...) somewhat where I want them to be, so the only challenge now is creating a fissure. I have an idea of how I want to do it, but blending it all together will be harder.
After that I'll probably add in minor aesthetics, whatever I think would look nice, and then all my adjustments. Which won't take nearly as long.
Also, the fractal render behind the planet is there because I want it to be the base of a sort of fiery/erupting nebula, but I need to get my smudge settings set correctly before I can do that, or I'll just use some cloud stocks. We'll see.

Any tips from this point going forward would be appreciated.

To be honest Ryan, I liked where you were going with the original.
The only real issues I seen, would probably be the texture integrity on your planet.
It needed that chunky, kind of earthy look, opposed to the flimsy almost paper look.
I understand the gears were just a base, compo seemed decent on those.
I personally would have just tweaked the planet, and kept working on it.

The original planet looked more like a gas giant, I agree...the only problem I saw coming was making it look real.
Notice the first planet has no back shell that's visible, just clustered asteroid renders. I needed to bring the fissure more to the front and less on the edge.
My plan is too keep the majority of the details I thought of first like the framework, maybe some pipes, and most definitely the gears, if that's part of what you're talking about...

If you can tell me what you liked specifically, I want to work it in...

EDIT: I just thought of this...would you want to collab with me on this? You're one of the best smudgers I know, and I think it could really boost this thing, especially when it comes to the nebula and the effects that will be coming off of the fissure, streams of particals behind and enveloping the left side of the planet shell, etc.

    And I don't think we've ever collab'd.

    Everything really..
I like how the asteroids were positioned, normally I hate flares but seemed fitting here and actually looked pretty good.
Also liked the aurora look behind the planet.
So really you have all the fundamentals down for a good planet setting..
So once you get the gears refined, then that would add the original artistic element.
You can go above and beyond that of course and ad some other surreal aspects to it too.

    EDIT: YES DO WANT COLLAB

    Fuck yes.
I'll get to work on the fissure/gears, and then we'll talk.
