    I can't seem to get the smudging to be around the same color of the bg.

    What I do is get the stock in, get the render in. Duplicate 3 times. Smudge the first two and erase part of the third so the smudging comes out, and than I put out a B&W gradient map and put it on multiply to give it a dark feel. From there on, I edit with lots of tools.
