A sniper on look out.
It was a cold morning in the foot hills above a small desert town. A soldier watched as the sun crested the hill on the far side of the war torn valley. Sniper training echoed in his thoughts… “Soldier! How dumb are you? Hiding in direct sunlight without cover will get you and your spotter killed!” But today, he and his team couldn’t find a better spot to watch the progress of their scouting expedition. He also knew that sitting in the open on a ledge without his spotter was insane. His best friend and spotter had been captured in an ambush the day before and that is the reason their invasion into this seemingly abandoned town.
He had been sent to the look out to watch for movement as the rest of the squad moved through the town searching the streets and buildings. He watched through his scope as they moved in and out of view. The crackle of the radio made him jump. A familiar voice came through the static, “Bug, you there? Squad two checking in.”
He had been known to his mates as Bug because of the way he could get into a sniper spot and never be seen by the enemy. His spotter was known as Lit’l Bug and they were inseparable. They had been awarded with the handle and call sign by the CO almost a year before. Much to their dismay and friend’s amusement the names stuck. He clicked the transmitter button on his collar, “I’m here and got you in my sight. Be careful down there. I’ve got a bad feeling about this one.”
Something to his right caught his attention. He released the transmitter and swung his rifle in the direction of what he thought he saw. He could see nothing but the dusty vacant city. Then he saw it again, a spark of light like the flash you get from striking a match or lighter. He kept his scope on an open window of a broken building.
He saw the orange glow of a cigarette as its smoker dragged on a long steady pull. Bug was just about to report to his squad when the glow turned blinding flash. He felt the bite of the bullet before he heard the gun’s report. He called to his squad but his warning went unheard through the gunfire. His squad was down and had been captured.
Bug nearly passed out from the loss of blood but not before sending a warning to the base HQ. He laid there immobile for a while. Base called and said a rescue party was on the way…
HQ here, we have an emergency. Call to arms, soldiers are down beyond enemy lines! An elite group of fighters is needed to rescue the down soldiers.
