Because a pistol grip is the handle of the weapon. A pistol grip is where the hand hold the trigger system firmly with a hand. Allowing the fingers to reload or change/turn the safety on without moving the hand too much in most weapons. Which was copied from many pistols such as the Colt. 45. It also allowed the weapon to be more stable and flexible with used. Because of this, most weapons are banned from having it in many countries and states. Most weapons have a 'straight grip' which is what is used in hunting rifles and old military rifles like the Mosin-Nagant series or the Mauser series (older models). The proper term is vertical rail grip or if you want to be more simple: rifle grip.
