Introduction
Mining is a really easy skill to level, especially if you're a member. This guide will go over what I feel are the best ways to get from level 1 all the way to level 99 as both a free and pay-to-play player. Next to woodcutting, mining should be the easiest skill to level that is available to both members and free-players. It honestly doesn't take that much time and probably has the best powerleveling options available. This guide will cover both money-making strategies and powerleveling strategies. Without any further ado, let's get onto the juicy stuff.

Equipment
- Level 1 - Bronze Pickaxe; 17 GP (available for free at Bob in Lumbridge)
- Level 1 - Iron Pickaxe; 230 GP
- Level 6 - Steel Pickaxe; 805 GP
- Level 21 - Mithril Pickaxe; 670 GP
- Level 31 - Adamant Pickaxe; 1,854 GP
- Level 40 - Sacred Clay Pickaxe; available only to members by playing the Stealing Creations minigame
- Level 41 - Rune Pickaxe; 19,100 GP (currently the best F2P pickaxe available)
- Level 41 - Inferno Adze; cannot be purchased. must be obtained by completing the "All Fired Up" activity
- Level 61 - Dragon Pickaxe; 11,800,000 GP (currently the best pickaxe available to members only)
It is recommended that at all times you use the best pickaxe available to you. Not only will this allow you to mine more ore but will also correlate to faster experience gain. If your combat level is high enough, wield the pickaxe to allow one more ore to be mined. It may not seem like much but it is.

Making Money
Levels 1 - 20 you're going to be mining both tin and copper. This is probably the fastest way to get to past level 15 which is the level required to mine iron. It's optional but if you have completed the Rune Mysteries quest, you can mine rune essence which yeilds only 5 experience but sells for 19 GP. I'd go with mining tin and copper, though. Once you reach level 20, you can smelt your copper and tin and make copper bars for smithing experience.
Levels 20 - 41 mine iron. The best place to do this is the Varrock East Mine. There are, I think, 4 iron ore rocks which can be mined. The only down side to this is the mine is usually crowded. One can world hop until he finds an uncrowded world if he wishes to. You mine iron until level 41 because coal can be mined at level 30 and at level 41 you're able to use the rune pickaxe.
Levels 41 - 75 mine coal. As of now, coal is worth 232 GP. With a rune pickaxe, you should be able to outmine anybody else that isn't using one. A good place to mine for coal with level 15 dungeoneering would be the Dwarven Mine Resource Dungeon due to the deposit box. If you do not have 15 dungeoneering, Gunnarsgrunn is also a good place because it's close to the Varrock and Edgeville bank.
Levels 75 - 85 mine adamantite ore. This is a very good way of making money via mining at this level because each adamantite ore is worth 766 GP. This means that every inventory full is 20,682 - 21,448 GP. Once again, a good place to mine this with 15 levels in dungeoneering is the Dwarven Mine Resource Dungeon.
Levels 85 - 99 should be every miner-hoping-to-make-money's dream. At this stage, you can mine runite ore. Runeite ore sells for a whopping 11,000 GP! Mining this ore, however, without 45 dungeoneering can be VERY dangerous. Two rocks can be found in level 46 wilderness at the Lava Maze runite mining site and if you're account is low leveled, you may want to steer away from this. With level 45 dungeoneering, you can go to the Mining Guild Resource Dungeon which is MUCH safer.

Preface: When powerleveling, there are two routes to take. First, you can mine a full inventory and then drop your ores once you're done. When doing this, make sure you go from top to bottom. That lets you make less mouse movements and, in my opinion, is more fluid. You also have the mine-one-drop-one method. As its name suggests, you mine one ore and then you immediately drop it. Drop the ore as you walk to another ore to mine as this allows you to not waste any time mining. I personally prefer the mine-one-drop-one method. Also, when powerleveling, it's VERY important to have the best pickaxe your level allows you to have. The better the pickaxe, the more you can mine and the more experience you can gain.
Levels
1 - 15 mine tin OR copper. Pretty standard stuff. Don't bother with mining both. They give the same experience per ore mined and you waste more time by walking over to the other ore. This should be ez-pz.
Levels 15 - 99 mine iron. One can gain up 40,000 experience an hour mining iron and dropping it. It's basically the fastest way to get to level 99 mining.
That's basically it for F2P. Sorry if you were a little disappointed with the powerleveling part but it's basically all there is to it.

Making Money
Levels 1 - 15 mine copper. It's worth more than tin so banking copper over tin will give you more gold. Right now, you're at a low level though so this miniscule amount of gold shouldn't really matter.
Levels 15 - 50 mine iron. It's up to you whether or not you want to bank the ore you mine. If you want to rush to level 50 to start mining some higher paying ores then powermine your way to 50. Running to the bank will cut down the experience you get per hour but it won't make that significant of a difference.
Levels 50 - 60 mine gold. Gold is currently worth less than coal but mining coal at higher levels allows you to mine it faster. Therefore, at this level stage, gold is your best shot. With a Ring of Charos (requires the completion of the Creature of Fenkenstrain, Garden of Tranquility, and the Do No Evil quest), one can efficiently mine gold in Dondakan's Mine.
Levels 60 - 85 mine coal north of Seer's Village to make use of the truck to bank your ore. Be careful, though. There are aggresive bats there. If your combat is low, consider taking food or finding a different spot to mine.
Levels 85 - 99 mine runite. This is the rarest and consequently, the most expensive ore. It will take 78,207 runeite ores to reach level 99 from level 85. The selling price for runite right now is 11,000 GP. Multiply the two and your total is 860,277,000 GP. You're reading that right. That's close to NINE-HUNDRED-MILLION. You know how much that is, right? Yeah. It's a lot.

Preface: as a member, you have access to a lot more things that help you level mining faster than a free-player. You have access to Stealing Creations which gives you a sacred clay that can be molded into a Sacred Pickaxe. The sacred clay requires 20 creation points which shouldn't be hard to obtain. The pickaxe allows you to gain double the experience you'd normally get for a limited time. What this means is the sacred pickaxe is best used at higher mining levels so it doesn't go to waste.Levels 1 - 15 mine copper or tin. Pick one or the other, not both. Drop the ore as soon as you mine it and click on the next rock available.
Levels 15 - 68 mine iron. It's the fastest possible way to get to 68 without mining granite. The problem with mining granite is the fact that you need waterskins and such. Mining iron until 68 will allow you to mine in the Lava Flow Mine.
Levels 68 - 88 mine in the Lava Flow Mine. You're not required to drop anything and you can just continuously mine.
Levels 88 - 99 mine concentrated gold rocks. These can be found in the Living Rock Caverns. Tread lightly, though. Low combat levels should be cautious when mining here and actually shouldn't be mining here at all. If you feel your combat level is too low to take on what lays down in the Caverns, feel free to mine iron or mine in the Lava Flow Mine.
