as far as the budget comment, thats coming from him not me; if he hadn't said he wanted to spend less i wouldn't have criticized the ram or the optical drive. as far as my ram comment, go on ************.com and look at completed builds that specify they're used for gaming that also have 16 gigs of ram. i bet you there is more than enough comments criticizing the choice of ram.
He said he wants to spend less than $2000, and unless you're incompetent at numeracy my build is less than $2000. As far as what other people say about ram, that is their opinion. There are many situations where 8gb may be a bottleneck for such a small investment you can remove that bottleneck. He may play games for now, but down the road he may want to do some recording and maybe some editing. Maybe he'll do some encoding or maybe he'll want to run a VM. Limiting yourself to the lowest common denominator at present, just to save a few bucks, is a shit way to build a computer that is meant to last a few years.
