We find personal meaning.
I who dabbled as an athiest for about 18months, but ended up returning to my faith, am curious, because i couldnt find one for myself (hence my arrival on buddhism), what do athiests find to be the meaning of life, besides the continuation of the species?

We find personal meaning.
"We swallow greedily any lie that flatters us, but we sip only little by little at a truth we find bitter." ~ Denis Diderot

The meaning of life is to live.
That's the idea, you don't need a meaning.. understanding that is the hard bit for some people..

To "perfect" the world as much as possible, and make it a better world for my children and grandchildren.
One can argue that our purpose is to create a better world for our descendants. If you believe in god and believe that our purpose is to become pious and transcend, then one can argue, that if god is almighty, why can't he snap his fingers (assuming he has a few) and make us pious. In fact, for what reason did he create us in the first place? Is this a game for him? Who knows....
