Leeching this off the Aeria forums worked for me:
Hey guys, there's a way to log in when servers are "down" even though they're not actually down its probably some kind of glitch of the game/server when trying to log in.
How to log in: Start logging in and wait until you get the timeout error then press Esc, that will close the tab. Now press f5 and click on "Decide". After this you should see that you're being connected again, just wait a little and you will get connected without an error.

I'm not taking any credits for this, i was told about this method of logging in by an admin of a pug (can't remember which pug was that and what the name of the admin was.)

Credits go to the original finder not me.
