    Laptop

Getting a new MacBook Air soon, how do these specs look?

1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    Intel HD Graphics 5000
    4GB memory
    256GB flash storage

Going to upgrade RAM to 8 when I buy though, Apple RAM costs a ton

The macbook in it's entirety is just shit. Why would you dish out $1400 for a macbook with an outdated dual core processor and HD 5000 graphics when you can build your own PC with 100% more power for just $1000? There isn't a whole lot that IOS can do that windows cant. Im really hoping that you aren't buying this for gaming, if it is for commercial use, i guess its fine, but i still dont understand why you would go for a macbook when you can get a similar windows laptop for much cheaper.

I am mainly using it for my design course at school next year. I prefer to use OS X due to the fact that I don't need to worry about keeping antivirus' up to date etc.

Also I am just used to OS X, my dad is only allowing me to get a Mac and I will probably only play LoL on this.

    Enjoy thermal shutdowns on i7.

    Get i5 (2.9ghz) with 8GB RAM with 1TB HDD and a GDDR3 1GB Card for around 800$

Like I said earlier, getting a PC isn't an option. Is the i5 much better in a laptop than an i7 ?

If you're going for an i7 in a laptop, it's there for even 800$ and even for 1300$.
But in most of the cases the laptop gets heated too quickly and you'll get it shutdowned randomly.

I didn't mention a pc at all. i5 is the best thing on a laptop.

Dell laptop with i5 got highly heated in 1 hour of crysis 2 maxed setting with 6gb ram. Whereas Sony Vaio E series with i5 8gb ram 2gb gddr5 card on the same game was played for 3 hours and then only it got heated.

Go for a good e-series viao i5 laptop, make sure you get the 2gb gddr3 or 1gb gddr5 nvidia or Radeon card. (2gb dedicated memory isn't a 2gb card)
Few models offer you Intel graphics card along with nvidia or Radeon so that you can press a hotkey to switch both cards for required usage like Intel while not gaming to have a good battery backup

Took me 10 minutes to write cos on mobile....

I can get the 4th gen Intel chips at a pretty solid price in a Mac.

My current setup is going to cost around $2000, which is my budget anyway
