I could put together a $350 computer than will run all modern games, even including Battlefield and Crysis. Drop in a bit more, say $600, and you can Max basically everything you throw at it. Also, that hardware argument is entirely stupid as with consoles, you're stuck with the same outdated hardware for 5-6 years.
