But that's practically a worst case scenario, unless it was thousands they probably wouldn't care enough to get debt collectors on you.

EDIT: Ooops re-read the OP, okay so it's thousands still doesn't mean it's definite that you'll get debt collectors but if you do best option would be to pay it off since it'll probably tarnish your credit score, etc and generally cause a bunch of problems.

On the bright side if you don't get debt collectors then you'll probably be mostly fine aside from a lifetime ban from using Paypal unless you sort it out.
Got debt collectors on me for -$470 balance. He will have debt collectors 100%. I was 17 at the time so the debt collectors fucked off, but if you ever want to use PayPal in the future you're going to have to pay it back. Since I'm making a ton of money now I just paid them their $470 since I can afford it, but don't think they will forget about it. If you're 18 or over your credit score will drop lower than a homeless person.

Happened to me before on eBay. It sucks. They just forwarded the debt onto a debt collector. Just create a new paypal.

Nothing happens, I sold a computer through E-bay and the seller disputed it after I had already spent the money and I went negative 400$ and a year later, nothing has happened other than some phone calls and a couple letters that are just trying to scare you. I just recommend never using that Paypal again and maybe getting a new debit/credit card from your bank that is what I did.

Wondering what will happen if I don't pay it back after being scammed off of eBay.
Gonna change debit card connected to it then closed the bank account.
Not sure what will happen .
    (from experience haha)
    the debit aggency
they will find your real phone number (yes , they will , don't ask me how but they will) and start calling you saying that if you don't pay they will send the process back to paypal which is bad and shit and they will sue you . Just be strong and don't tell that its your account , its almost impossible for them to demonstrate that its your account , they won't send the process back to paypal because its profitable .
You can ask to pay only 50% and they will accept , maybe not from the first call but they are fine with that
