And it all depends on you man...if you willing to cash out a few more bucks for a few extra features (some more 3d support and 'a bit easier to use' tools)

(If its for basic use then I think cs4 is fine, I have Cs4 and I like it a lot)

i have cs4 extended, and had cs3 b4 that, cept for the look of the layout, i cannot see a difference.

There are differences between CS3 and CS4 such as enhanced existing features from CS3, they're pretty small and for ease of use I go with CS3 Extended only because It's portable.
