This is what happens pretty much every upgrade cycle, people set themselves up for very unrealistic expectations. I'm guilty of doing it, too, I thought it would be more impressive. However, it will be several months down the road before we can compare 980ti to 1080ti. 1080 vs 980 is a huge jump. I suspect 980ti vs 1080ti will be more fair.

If you are 1080p, this is totally pointless. If you have high res displays and are pushing your card to its upper limit and still getting barely passable FPS, this will put you over the edge to an enjoyable experience. From 25 fps to 35-40 fps on 4k games. Looks like 1440p is going to be the spot for a while (and that's fine with me, I personally prefer it).
