Yeah, that's more than fine for 1440p gaming. Might lag behind a bit if you want to run modern titles in ultra though.
Although if you're happy with 1080p gaming just stay there, maybe upgrade to a 144Hz monitor.
Here is my build:
GPU: Saphhire R9 390x (Triple Fan, OC)
CPU: i5-4690k
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB, 2133 MHz
Mobo: MSI Gaming Z97
PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 650w
Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro M
SSD: Samsung 850 evo 256 GB
HDD: WD Blue 1TB 7200 RPM
I mainly game at 1080p however planning to go 1440p. A friend told me that a 390x is already overkill for 1080p and that I won't have any issues at 1440p, but I wanted to get some advice first.

Not a bag GPU but should sell it and buy 1060 or 1070. 1080 if you wanna run 1440p with practically no problems. Everything else looks good

Newer titles will have you turning a few settings down at 1440.
But overall the specs are good, I would just work on the aesthetics if thats your thing

a better gpu/cpu can never hurt.
but no you don't really need an upgrade
