I have just spoken to the Microsoft customer service for Skype. The reason I came in contact with them was because I wasn't able to choose my own username upon registration. It used my e-mail and put ****** in front of it. I don't know if anyone really needs this information but I thought I might as well let everyone know anyway.
The only way to currently create an account with your own chosen username is here: https://login.skype.com/registration
I tried asking when they would be removing the feature and they replied with:

It turns out that creating an account with this method gives you the error below when trying to access Skype web client:

Like if username matter.
~ High up and we're floating
luckily i made my skype years ago
now nobody can impersonate, cause they gonna have ******name
Would be good for the traders using Skype, welcome no imposters!
I am not a middleman nor do I buy/sell anything. If you are being contacted by someone off-site from MPGH then it's not me! Please report these to me via PM. Don't be stupid, think first.

I like usernames though, I don't wanna fuck with that email shit. xD So will our usernames change or is it just the new accounts that are affected?
I do not think it will change. I started the conversation with the employee with "How do I create an account with a username I can choose." They sent me this link and told me to save it. They told me it will go soon and judging by the way they were talking I don't think current ones will be changed. I think they would have mentioned it as well because that was what the whole conversation was about, but I did not directly ask that question.

Doesn't matter much to me, I made my skype years ago and won't be changing for a long time.
I'm not surprised they're doing something like this.
