Thumbs up Is this a good upgrade?

So I found this super old PC and I was thinking of updating it. It has a LGA 775 slot for the cpu on the mobo, 2gb ddr2 ram, some pentium d, and pentium d integrated graphics (gma 3000 or something)

So this is what I'm planning to get:

Some monitor (not sure what yet)
    Some case
    Core 2 Quad Q9650
    GTX 650 ti
    4 GB of ram

Also I could upgrade the mobo and ram and get a G4560 and DDR3
If you are wondering why I don't just build a PC from scratch is because thats expensive and also this upgrade might seem like a huge upgrade but really I'm mainly just going to get some ram, the cpu, and the gpu and maybe the case and then afterwards if I want to get a monitor and stuff

I'm pretty sure motherboards with an 1151 socket only support ddr4 ram

Yes you're correct, why not get a gtx 1080 then refund it and then buy the 1151 mobo with whatever cpu you wanted and ddr4 ram

If not what will you be using the desktop for?

Thats still pretty expensive but I can't afford a gtx 1080 even if I get the money back. I guess I'll just get the 1151 mobo, ddr4, i3-6100, and rx480

ur post is confuzzling the G4560 is a LGA 1151 socket, and the Core 2 Quad Series is a 775 socket

Two things. If you do go for the G4560 make sure you get a board that is compatible. If you get a Z170 you would need to a Skylake CPU to flash it before you can use it. Second, should probably get more RAM. Standard is 8GB now a days.

Oh ok I get it now. If you upgraded the existing board to a core 2 quad you would get good performance but be careful as some LGA 775 motherboards won't take core 2 series. But could be a good cheap upgrade. Locally people sell the q6600 where I live for around $20

Why not just refund some parts from Amazon and then get a better PC?

I have this build but with rx470. It's certainly good but the cpu does bottleneck the gpu a fair bit, especially in cpu intensive games like GTAV.
Probs best budget 60fps 1080p build tho.

Thanks but I found another pc that already has a Core 2 Duo so if the other PC doesn't work with Core 2 then I can just put the upgrade in the other PC

(My Optiplex 745 is the one I found originally and the one with the core 2 duo is the Optiplex 755

You'd be better off getting at least 8Gb of RAM. There's no point in having a sick GPU if you'r pc doesn't haven't enough memory to process everything at a time.
