How to play with a friend alone - non dedicated

Hey guys, just bought Cod4 yesterday, and I've been looking around on how to play with your friend, like a private server. We can't get the "Start a new server" thing to work for some reason, and I don't want it dedicated. Anyone has a clue? Please help me!

If i have dedicated on the game shuts down and the console pops up. My friend can't join. If I use non-dedicated the map loads when I start but my friend can't join. He gets "Server connection timed out".

When the console pops up go ingame again and chose LAN

hamachi is a program that connects people just like a lan, this makes you play toghetter trough LAN sevices
