Pretty much we created a living organism. This is insane.
This could bring along a end to pollution, several diseases and ailments...

Needless to say, I read the whole thing.
This could definitely go somewhere.
The one part that stuck out to me was the "suicide" gene that could be able give an exact time to the span of an organism's life, thus controlling populations.
Could this be used to kill things such as cancerous tumors do you think?

Doesn't matter just unspecialized cells. They wont get beyond cloning and slight genetic modification, nothing God-like at all just a ruse and copying. Scientist fail, they beat around with sticks instead of observing considerately, we most certainly aren't ready for genetic engineering if we're too stupid to realize we're poisoning ourselves Our world is being raped....

Yes, I had thought of them generating cells that could devour cancerous cells. (or something like that)

Also, as petty as it may be, could it be used on a much smaller scale as well.
I'm thinking about killing weeds or pest control.
Instead of laying poison around your house, just shorten the life span of rats around your house to maybe 5-6 mire hours...
But I could be just letting my imagination go.

They went this far with no notification of any mishaps and problems.
I didn't read the whole thing because my mom's disconnecting the internet soon (I need to help her with moving furniture, Home Depots installing a new stove, so im timed right now)
Anyways, if they can release to the public about any problems that happened then we should know how to trust them, right?
Will any evil WORLD RULING companies / agencies around the world try to get a hold of this and have it made for eating up military machinery, buildings, banks, homes, etc;
Or did I get too realistic with The Losers.

Cool story but old
Read it on reddit a few days ago.
Synthetic life brings many interesting prospects.
We're not playing god just yet but give it another 5-10 years of research.
The DNA was designed but implanted into a surrogate cell. We'll be playing god when we create a crude cell, speed up cellular evolution to account for the 1.5 billion years it took for Eukaryotic cells to evolve to their current state.

However I don't want to belittle this achievement, this is a great first step and it will lead to brand new fields of science and engineering. Needless to say I'm psyched.

BTW:
We can't really play God, we'd have to stop existing.
