U used..umm..lets say a dark render, dark themed one.
Then, the BG should be dark themed too.
dont try to make BGs by yourslef like u made urs atm( never use 3D ones), search dA for BG's which would suit grim reaper, something related to death, battlefields, war etc etc..
There are no tuts exactly for lighting, blending, flow etc etc..
This is why doc and scrcrw said read tuts, a good tutorial has all stuffz in it...all is explained.
Just try to follow a couple of tuts and u will start getting what is lighting,flow,depth..
    KIU dude

I did the BG like that to try for a Hall effect.. I remembered an old movie where Satan was on a throne, and he had a fiery hall behind him.. sort of my inspiration on that..

I've followed tutorials to a T.. Basically see how things are done and try my own way of doing it.. I admit im no pro, and i need a LOT more practice at making sigs, but honestly i think i deserve atleast a tip or two..

I can think of 1 individual time i was working on a sig, posted it, and actually got some help on it.. yea, it was Kyle... EVERY other single person posted "read some tuts" which is in no way helpful...

BTW here's the image i used for the BG

Like you know that tut I posted a few days back. That's designed to help beginners and pros alike to learn the basic concepts of tag making. Things include the rule of thirds, good text vs bad text, colours and composition. In order to advance as fast as possible you need to be able to grasp these concepts. Hope that helps :P

I haven't gone entirely through that tutorial.. skimmed through it to see what all it offered for tips or tricks, but i'll make my next sig based on it.
