Is crossfire using punkbuster? When I look at all my process' and running programs i see punkbuster, and when I end the process crossfire won't start.

No, CF is using X-Trap, and GameGuard.
Punkbuster starts upon login, and stayes like that.

It sometimes ends randomly.

punkbstA or B are services of Punkbuster running on your pc

And the most logical thing is it notices X-trap running and it has some problems with it or something like that

Punk buster is for heavy games like f.e.a.r combat its for protection for hacks and more it not easly to explane..:P

as far as i know,cf does not use punkbuster

Punkbuster is a "hack-defender" detects deletes hacks, and (i heard) reportes the user, who hacked. Also, it's a shit, because if it runs together with Avast or MSN Message Defence(or something like that) it takes your WHOLE CPU. So I usually delete the processes of it upon start up.

PunkBuster if I'm correct is like one of the ultimate hack protection programs.

That takes screen shots of your game every once in awhile to make sure that you aren't hacking. /yea

Punkbuster is the hardest to hack hack defender of all, and it auto takes screenies and reports the user. I hope CF won't start usingthis program in the future..
