I could go on for days about this, but I'll keep it short to prevent myself from going into a never ending flame;:


Religion as spiritualism.
Many people need something to believe in to fill in the unanswered questions, hopes and fears.
Religion as spiritualism can be a positive guideline to these people and help in various ways, like going through rough periods in life or keeping oneself 'on the right track'.

However, there is no excuse for actually believing that YOUR religion (1 out of over 20 MAJOR religions, with countless variations)
is THE one and ONLY truth. If, for example, you are born and raised Christian in a mainly Christian country, how can you not see that if you would have been born in, or adopted by, a Muslim family in a mainly Muslim country, you would now be a convinced Muslim just the same. or the other way around.

People who fail to relativize their beliefs, are most likely indoctrinated beyond their mental capacity to think rationally and fight free from these ideas. Which brings me to the second part:

Religion as Political organisations and Social instruments
Religion, the way we know it, is (and has always been) used to control populations. 'In the name of *insert any god here*', countless people have been killed, exploited, and robbed with the sole purpose of gathering power (control) and wealth.
Looking at the wealth in Christian churches or the vatican, or the oppression of women in several Muslim countries are perfect examples.
The influince the religious institutes have in Politics is alarming and strangely accepted. Whether it be some extremist Muslim country or the USA.

I am very thankful, to have been raised in a country/family that (over the past 100 years only!) has gradually fought free of religion, giving me a sober, rational vision on things.
I could just as well have been born elsewhere (or 100 years ago in the same country) and been just as religiously biased as so many people out there.

PS: Sorry to bring it to you, but there is no meaning of life. There is nothing after death. just like plants, animals or any living creature, you live your life and die.
