Example, in the strict Kosher side of the Jewish law, you're not suppose to eat meat and dairy produce together.
Meat back then was a troublesome problem, you might have dieases and other thing lurking around. The reason why pork products are banned, is because pig loves to roll around in their own shit and cheese/milk was often not contained in safe containers or heated to kill bacteria.. As a Jewish farmer I own a few pigs, but I refuse to eat them, but instead sell the meat.
In Islam, TOUCHING anything with pork is 'offensive' and often viewed as very dirty (just under bare feet and in most Islamic nations.. the left hand).
