For external:
you have to format, or customize up to 16GB of storage to use.

There's not much need to format, are you sure you didn't damage it?

I wouldn't suggest doing that. Most HDD's are incompatible with the xbox 360's.
Just buy a new one.

The 60GB HDD's are overpriced, but you can get a 250GB HDD for around $125.

I did go with just buying my friends 20GB HDD going to use it for my XNA Programming.
