Manufacturers refer to gigabytes as 1000 MB when it's really 1024 MB.

Accepted and correct are two different things.
And I think the way OS X does it is actually worse. Instead of changing the reported file size, they should change the words (mebibyte instead of ********).

Windows tells you the exact amount of space its taking. So It would be considered correct and accurate.
