    Possibly?
    Let me check.

    Edit: I bought an 8 GB USB flash storage drive and Snow Leopard is reporting it as 8GB.
    I assume on windows it would show up as < 8 GB, so yeah.

    I am confusing myself now. I think my blood glucose level may be low, I feel a little dizzy.

    This should apply everywhere but it doesn't. Usually a 1GB usb key will have 1GiB and a 512MB memory card will have 512MiB, but HDDs often (conveniently) use GB instead of GiB. Now I gotta go sleep too, it's 4:24 am :/

    Its the same for all memory storage devices.

    A 2GB device is like 1.3 - 1.7. I forget.

    Edit: OSX will report it the way it is written on the drive. But when using it you will see that you cannot store more then 7GB or so of info.

    I think I've got it.

    GiB = Base 2
    GB = Base 10

    - Manufacturers sell a 320 GB drive; 320 GB calculated using base 10 (correctly).
    - Windows sees that 320 GB drive and says it's 298 GB (should be GiB), calculated using base 2 but written with base 10 terms (MB, GB, etc.).
    - Snow Leopard sees that drive as 320 GB, calculated using the same calculations the manufacturer used, and also labeling it appropriately.

    You got it. But remember bytes are all calculated to the power of 2. That is why a drive typically comes in powers of 2 sizes.

    Ex: 512 MB, 256 MB, 1024MB (1GB)

    If drivers are sold as GB (which they are) that ^ is not true.

    The IEEE Standards Board has decided that "Mega will mean 1 000 000", with exceptions allowed for the base-two meaning.

    So basically MB is the lazy man's way of thinking.

    So to sum everything up Windows is too dumb to figure out that it's showing the wrong set of calculations.

    It's not "wrong", it's just not "as right as" MiB / GiB etc. /

    Wrong in the sense that they represent the stats in the wrong terminology.
