Is Steam required for Black Ops?

My friend and I were having a discussion about cracked Black Ops and bots, and he told me MP was impossible to use with cracked version. I told him no it's not, because people can make cracked servers for other people with cracked clients. Then he told me Black Ops was Steam exclusive I told him it wasn't, and that my friends from xfire play legit Black Ops all the time, and they've never even HEARD of Steam. Then he told me that either they DO have a cracked version, or they have no idea what the crap they're talking about. The final decision was to come and ask on the forums, and if I was right, I was right. If he was right, then he was right. Honestly, if it's Steam exclusive, I'll be PISSED, but I can't get mad at him for that :P Anyway, what I'd like to know is, is it Steam only, or not?

No such thing as cracked MP yet. Only Bots. Black Ops needs Steam to function.
