I always thought that if you bought a game that is registered on steam (buying a game from the steam store or third-party games) you would only play with those that bought it on steam. So if I bought Borderlands from a retail store, I wouldn't get to play coop or multiplayer with those that bought it on steam. Is this true? I hate digital distribution, but most of the people I play with buy games from steam. PLEASE HELP.

you buy instore, you register your copy on steam, YOU PLAY ONLINE

Will I be able to register a retail game as a steam game? (Make Borderlands that i bought from a store into a steam game)
If it's retail, or you bought if online, you can play with anyone who has it online. In that tab in Steam, they just say the type of your purchase.

Make sure that it is supported in Steam. You cant register ALL games through steam. But buying steam is the same as buying retail, only with retail you will have a disc.
