So you posted a screenshot of the gui that was shipped out with the 1.4 update. Your not going to talk about all the architecture that was added in at all? There was quite a lot more shipped out than an unfinished GUI.

Taken from the stats_US.lang inside the lang folder in the minecraft.jar

Times played Assuming the number of times the client is opened.
Worlds played the number of worlds that you have played in.
Saves loaded The amount of times you have loaded a game/map/save
Multiplayer joins The amount of times you join a multiplayer server. This also implies that stat tracking will be included in multiplayer as well.
Games quit The amount of game the player quits. Unknown if its the amount of times the client is exited (seems unlikely given the first option) the amount of times a player quits from a map, or the amount of times a player quits a multiplayer game (again, unlikely due to the last option)
Minutes Played Obviously the amount of minutes the game is played.
Distance Walked The amount the player travels.
Distance Fallen The distance the player has spent while falling. Hopefully there will be a trigger for this, or else ever time you jump the time spent coming down would count as falling. I would say amount of time spent falling >1 block.
Distance Swum Amount of distance traveled in water
Distance Flown Distance flown? I bolded this because atm there is no way to fly in MC save for external applications, or mods. A hint at a future update might be here.
Distance Climbed Probably the distance climbed up ladders.
Distance Dove Most likely the amount of time spent underwater, as there is no other dive function in minecraft.
Jumps How many times you have jumped.
Items Dropped Items you have dropped
Damage Dealt The amount of damage you have dealt. This will probably include damage to friendly and hostile mobs, and if stats are supported in MP, then other players too.
Damage Taken Amount of damage taken. Unknown if it will include damage from non-hostile-mob related damage, but most likely yes.
Number of Deaths Amount of times you have died
Mob Kills # of mobs you have killed (probably including friendly mobs)
Player Kills This pretty much seals the deal for MP stat tracking. This would be the # of player you have killed online.
Fish Caught # Of fish caught
Blocks Mined # of blocks mined. This probably includes simply breaking blocks, as not all blocks are technically 'mineable'
Items Crafted # of items you have made. (Including smelting?)
Items Used # of items that get used such as food, or arrows
Items Depleted # Of tools that get worn out.

Not all of these may be used, but it seems that this is what we can expect from stat tracking.

What? The GUI, and what I posted was shipped out with the 1.4 update. Its part of the architecture for the Stats and Achievements system, which has now been pushed back to being added in the 1.5 update.
