Whys is it so? Borders: Friend or Foe?

Why do people like borders? Why do some don't?

What purpose do they serve? Is there any practicality involved, is it simple aesthetic?

Why do beginners, novices, and even some mods think they are a requirement and that not having them is a detriment to even signatures, let alone art?

I believe in some cases that borders can be ok. Whether it be a simple cut-off to a signature to "encapsulate" the contents, or simply to make it easier to see the contents of a dark tag against a light background.

What are your thoughts on it?

I should make a series of discussions about tag making. Be good for "noobs" and others, haha.

I think it depends, to me a border can honestly make a sig better, for a more cinematographic style as well as decoration. Also it can state boundaries, not only literally but as a flow of the sig. Depends, everything in life has a border... without it everything would melt into the next, no distinction no end.

I guess you're right. But why do I see people always saying, ur sig needs borders, or you're not good coz u never use borders. People could at least use some justification for such things. Perhaps it just gets drilled into people minds after reading countless starter tuts.

Another thing I wanted to point out is how come no one ever makes good looking borders? A good picture has a good frame, so if borders are needed then why not make a good looking border, rather than a standar widescreen 2px border, or a 1px black+2px white+1px black (I'm not sure how to explain it but I'm sure you understand).

I've now decided to go back to my latest sigs and start adding in some nice borders. And I'm going to mix it up a bit.

Why do people like borders? Why do some don't? Im not a fan of them because they kind of drag me away from the focal

What purpose do they serve? Framing your work
And maye theyre to add more "detail" to simple sigs.

Why do beginners, novices, and even some mods think they are a requirement and that not having them is a detriment to even signatures, let alone art?

    idk

Well for me some borders are like...srsly i just like plain black then people but bevel and emboss shit on it and fuk up the whole sig.
So for me i use borders when... they look good on it.
sometimes they look good and somethimes they dont.

    Nice thread

Nawwwwws, you don't have to. We all know your stance on sigs and how restrictive they are (especially in ones view of art), and quite frankly I also share that view.

Borders are fine as long as they don't deter the atmosphere of the piece.
Kids that say stupid fucking shit like:
"He don't have border this ruins it" obviously have artistic Down syndrome, and have no business giving critique in the first place.

Everyone branches their own way I guess. I still think there's some amazing small art, I just have an preference. My brain doesn't work as well in small spaces.
