I'd say work on blending, and try to stay away from the cheesy text effects. It makes it look REALLY bad.

And about the blending, I write "blending tutorials" in Google but all I get is how to put one pic above another...

Stick to using simple fonts, even Arial or Times New Roman. That work very well for subtle text.
