you might try running one of these third party programs that patch xp with vista/7 aero themes. never tried myself but if they use the same coding for overlay I don`t see why it wouldn`t work

how do i disable updates after replacing the dll?

in your installation folder look for iw4mp.cfg back it up then open same file using notepad make sure the contains in it looks like this then save and replace the strings ending with 1 to 0 and leave the rest as is
enable_updates 0
enable_upload 0
