And going to war is what they wanted, they did it to try to start a religious war.

They started the war by bombing Pearl Harbor. This wasn't in retaliation to anything, it was done for the sole purpose of causing terror and mayhem.

EDIT: Removing Al-Keida from power and helping put a democracy into place isn't doing anything? And wars cost a lot of money. They also stimulate the economy naturally.
