Every religion is founded like this:

Caveman 1: 'wow! Urg just got hit by a giant bolt of lightning!'

Caveman 2: 'oh look! if I roast my raw mammoth in Urg's burning remains it tastes better!'

Caveman 1: 'there is a big caveman up in the sky helping us!'

Caveman 1*+ Caveman 2: 'all praise to {insert deity}! we love you, {insert deity}!'

Caveman 2: 'you know, what is the point of living?'

Caveman 1: 'so you can {insert 40 virgins/reincarnation/heaven/various other afterlifes here}'

Caveman 2: 'i have a purpose! yay!'

(caveman 3 overheard)

Caveman 3: wow let me go tell everyone!

10 years later.. Teaching their sons about the giant caveman in the sky.. Now the disease of religion has spread even more..

Caveman's Son: 'let me go tell all my friends!'

A couple thousand years later, the disease has spread EVERYWHERE.. people are beginning to question it.. They are burned at the stake

Still, later, more begin to question, and with the advent of the internet, they voice their opinions on mpgh.net

Religion started in Prehistory as an explanation for rain (there was no way they could know about the water cycle). They thought that a god(s) controlled the rain, and wanted to appease them.
