This is the Alienware m17x btw. I'm getting this for christmas.

The laptops are the only things that Alienware makes that isn't overpriced. I have yet to see something this powerful for under $2000.

My whole thing with how well it runs on ultra is so that I can use fraps and probably do some game vids as well as commentaries and stuff like that.

GPU: Probably better than mine, I play maxed out @ 60+ fps
    CPU: It's an i7, 3.5 GHZ?
    Ram: 4GB, DDR3? You're fine.

I don't even think upgrades are nessecary.

What are the risks of overclocking the processor? Will it burn out quicker, or what?

For 2000$ you would build my comp for less and still get more performance :|
Since i have a desktop pc with a powercolor radeon 6870 a core i5 3.20 ghz 2500 non k and 4 gigs of ram... and you could still had more ram and a crossfire the powercolor radeon with another 68XX and run in on ultra 120 fps no problem :|
Music historian here to please and displease, learning to teach all you peeps,so stop by the music part of the forum, and ask the question to your needs.

    /fp It's $1500. It's a laptop. You can't custom build laptops.

Overclocking risks overheating massively and shortening the lifespan of the laptop. I suggest not doing it unelss its like 4 years old and you got nothing else to do with it.

Overclocking? On a laptop? Good luck with that, but be sure to buy a couple thousand cooling pads.

Do you know how multi-GPU works?
It doesn't use 100% of each card unless you use only 1 card or 4 cards but not much support quad sli/fire.

    It wont run on ultra a GtX 560M ( Mobile version ) is a gts450/GTX 550 TI ( desktop GPU )
which means it will run on high but not on ultra ( unless you want to play with 20-40FPS )
But i'd recommend you to always turn off MSAA and put the AA ( or w/e it was ) to 8× because that will give you a large FPS boost without the graphics getting worse. Oh btw you seem to have 1,5GB GPU ram which is also verry good because BF3 uses more than 1GB ( you can have 1GB it wont be a problem but you will have some framedrops sometimes )

your CPU ( Intel I7 ) is also good enough
its a quad core so it will defently help with games like BF3
keep in mind that your laptop might become hot after a while because your CPU and GPU load will probably be above 70% most of the time

Ram might be an issue if your planing on recording etc... while playing BF3 because they will use more than 4GB
but it will be fine when you only have BF3 active

youll be able to play on high for sure but you will get some frame drops sometimes

I have a GTX 560 TI and i can play everything maxed

    Edit :

@[MPGH]bullpop he isnt lying he is able to run it on ultra ^^ i can do it to ( ofc i have the TI version = better )

    @ xplode16

    LOL

    Edit²:

BTW, i wouldnt get an alienware to be honest they are way to expensive and there are laptops which are even better ( they will run BF3 on ultra ) and cheaper
try to look for asus and MSI gaming laptops much cheaper and much better!

Thank you for the in depth answer. I normally wouldn't understand it, but you put it in a way that it's understandable.
