Hory shit. Is that what Earth is gonna look like when the sun gets mad at us?
Sexy depth and good job on the planet.
This is the first thing I've done since the beginning of 2011. Roughly.
All done from scratch except the asteroids and some lighting effects that were renders.
I submitted a cropped version for the battle, but I felt like posting the original canvas was important. The crop was to take out some negative space.

Looking good. The one think that makes me wonder is how the light gets to the objects on the top part of the piece. If the light originates from the bottom left part of the Earth (I'm assuming), how does it reach around and behind the Earth to hit those objects above? Just a wonder.

Negative space isn't entirely bad. Go do your research on how negative space is used to balance a composition before you point out flaws that people with far more experience than you who how to appreciate and discern from things that hurt the piece chose not to mention. And then think about why they didn't mention it.
It's okay, I'll answer it for you.
Anything else on that canvas would have taken away from the entire subject and thrown the focus off the planet. There's a dynamic going on with the planet that needs attention, and I'm not going to distract from it.
"Effects", as you stated, would just be spam if they were anywhere else other than on the subject or near the focal point.
Now, your suggestion, as of my last sentence being entirely illegitimate, the only other option to take care of this, in your view, "unpardonable mistake" is to crop everything out but the planet.
And that would just look stupid.
I can take justified critique. Shayne and Matt both have valid points about lighting and contrast. You, however, who have learned almost everything you know from this little forum section (where negative space is most commonly mentioned in critique about very amateur tags and never large work), haven't the correct understanding of artistic elements, otherwise you would know that negative space is used on purpose.
