If you can't afford to purchase an anti-virus (or don't want to pirate it) I recommend you install Avira Free AntiVirus (sometimes shows ads but it's for their own software only) or Avast! Antivirus. They provide good protection and have good detection rates. MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) is crap imho, I don't really like it.
Otherwise if you do want to get a non-free AV, I recommend to use ESET Smart Security. Since it's lightweight on system resources and has good detection rates. Although Bitdefender Internet Security and Kaspersky Internet Security currently provide the best overall protection along side with detection rates (check AV-Comparatives and AV-Test), I've had problems where both of them basically made my computer so slow that the desktop couldn't load (note that I didn't have them both installed at once, NEVER HAVE MORE THAN 1 ANTIVIRUS INSTALLED). But feel free to try any of those two aswell, it was probably something wrong with my PC. I've reformatted it since I installed it anyway so yeah. Bitdefender Internet Security 2012 is currently installed on my sister's laptop and my cousins' computers. They haven't been hit with a virus since.
Also, I recommend you do a FULL scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, it's free however you are free to upgrade for realtime protection at any time (there is also a free trial available when you install for the first time). Just note that's it is not a replacement for an anti-virus so even if you do get realtime protection, do not uninstall your antivirus.
Let me know how everything goes.
VundoFix? Assuming that he has Virtumonde on his computer, why download it. Symantec/Norton is just ew.

Kaspersky is better, the ESET has let me down sometimes...
Bitdefender 2011, You can torrent it and have an anti-virus that last till 2048. But Make Sure its 2011 because 2012 is a massive resource Hog. The best thing about bitdefender is that I leave it on Game Mode all the time and scan once a week. Haven't had to reformat for 3 Years now whilst doing this method.

I use Windows Defender.
I download a shitload of shows, and I don't have a virus yet because of it.
