U will not get banned, if u just change using .rez method, i think.
If u change them by a Hack, so u Inject it ingame somehow, u can get ban.
As of now, it is patched, so without the right tools u will not be able to use .rez
mods which are changing ur weapon skins or something like that.
Update me if I'm wrong.

Like seriously?? MODDING weapons are just like changing kill marks...

In Crossfire PH the GM itself declared that modding skin weapons is not a violation.. *u can see it somewhere in crossfire ph forum*

But I do know that some crossfire servers from other countries prohibits the modding of skin weapons... and anyway, Smilegates is already aware and making their move, they blocked one *i think* crossfire server in modding weapon skins...

but I would like to say that it's not big deal at all.. I think its safe for you since only YOU can view it, but when you have troubles in opening ur crossfire application then stop putting mods in ur cf directory..

And anyway Im using like 8 MODS.. lol.. and my CF is perfectly running good just the same as when Im still not using mods...
