if ur using photoshop, try using the gradient tool, but only in a select part of the gun, then adjust the curves
normally, u should do a two color scheme on ur gun, since black is pretty much universal any color will be fine
I've tried many different shades of black for the Scar-L, but none of them seem to look good. They make some odd brown at first then they go all saturated and ugly! Does anyone have any suggestions? I use the overlay brush but I don't know much about Photoshop so I can't really figure any other ways to change it.

Just make a new layer, set it to multiply and color that layer black with the paintbucket and change the opacity to whatever you like.
Go on the first layer and duplicate it. Click Crtl + Shift + U on the duplicated layer. Add a brightness/contrast mixer and adjust to your liking.
