I don't really feel personally atracted to either this subject the OP or this user "speedforyou". But you're right, just not with the words, first of all the choices the OP makes are his, we as far as I know aren't neither his father or even a family member or friends that are close enough to tell him what should he do with his life, they guy is not asking wether or not he was an idiot he was asking for a tip, an advice.
