Those are gaming cards, not designed for 3D rendering.
For 3D rendering you use your Quadros and Teslas...

tho in college I took Interactive media and have rendered in 3D and had no problems at all

Yeah you won't have problems it's that it's not meant to do 3D rendering.

Essentially Quadro cards are just normal GeForce cards with more VRAM and slightly different software/firmware/drivers that include certain workstation/rendering/other related shit features not commonly used in games etc. Provided you're getting a high-end Geforce card, you might not even have to bother with Quadros as their increased price does not justify the extra VRAM and featuers in most cases.
