The 550, save urself the extra cash, both great cards though, the older version is more for people who render shit in SHD (Super High definition) not jokin
In theory 9800GX2 (GDDR3) is faster (much more memory bandwidth, textel and pixel rate), but it's using a older technology than GTX 550 Ti (GDDR5)....
In the price..well you can see it by yourself...
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 - $190
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti - $109.99
Which one should I buy???

550ti is a horrible price to performance card. Get a 6850.
If you get anything under a 460 or 560 u shouldn't bother.

Dude, you're from Australia right?
You should go for a minimum of 560 Ti.
ASUS GTX 560 Ti DirectCU II Overclocked 1GB [ENGTX560TIDCII2DI1GD] - $259.00 : PC Case Gear
But if you can't spend that much go for 560.
ASUS GeForce GTX 560 1GB DirectCU [ENGTX560-DC-1GD5] - $195.00 : PC Case Gear
Well I'm not from AU, but I guess this might be decent:
