    Cable vs DSL

    So, what's better?
    I'm asking this because I'm getting a new ISP, but they have two plans, and I want to know which is better?

    I think Cable is faster than DSL but it uses a Shared Bandwidth feature which might limit your Download Speed based on the amount of people on the Network, Where as DSL isn't Shared and doesn't have that restriction...

    I'm currently using DSL going to switch to FiOS in 2013

    I'm willing to get unlimited, but there don't have Fibe. Only Bell has Fibe. I'm going for teksavvy though

    Urban/suburban > DSL

    Rural (and I mean less than a hundred people on one line > cable

    Then slightly alter the cap in your routers docsis file. My ISP promised us 10Mbps with our package for DSL. We get 1.2 on a GOOD day. I checked the docsis file and it was capped at 1.5. I altered it to 4 so it wouldn't be as noticeable. Through my neighbors wifi (all unprotected WPA LOL) I changed all of theirs to 2.5, so I would still obtain my decent speeds but so everyone else in te neighborhood maintains their Internet speed at a more equivalent level, to keep myself from being caught. It's been a year now, and still nothing. My Internet speeds are significantly greater now. My whole family can play D3 at once and still be downloading music without too much interruption.

    DSL caps at 12 MBits, under normal circumstances. Cable is a lot higher, I think 150 MBits, but owned by media companies who put in restrictions to make more money from their own products. It's really a trade off and a personal choice to fit your own needs.

    at the guys who are just saying DSL. You guys are looking at the figures if the line ONLY went to his house and no one else's, which we all know is not the case for any internet service.

    Cable is a shared network. Your cable line runs through every home on the line equally. Because of this, cable can be significantly slower due to the amount of people accessing the Internet at one time, whereas with DSL your connection is not affected by these implications.

    Cable=run through everyone's house on the line.
    DSL=runs through each house individually.

    Though with DSL the speed difference isn't as noticed because of the bandwidth cap on your modem in the docsis file.

    I'm currently using Cable
    It's faster than my previous provider of DSL

    However, I think there is more support/help for DSL
    Customer Service for Cable sucks
