Now, 2 things about gold: it is shiny and rare (based on the amount in circulation), and thus, valuable and it is also malleable. The shininess and rarity has for centuries, been fought over for. The malleability allows it to be molded to however the manipulator deems fit. Gold has no real value once we stop caring about it.
