IV. World War I Concludes

V. The Treaty of Versailles

C. The final Draft of the Treaty
1. The French and English passed a treaty that punished Germany.
a. Germany was given full blame for the war
b. Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, Russia, and Germany were divided up into new countries.
c. A League of Nations was created, but it excluded the central Powers and Russia.
2. America Rejects the Treaty
1. President Wilson recognized that there was much wrong with the treaty, but felt that because it included the League of Nations, America should ratify it.
2. Many believed that the treaty was a betrayal of American ideals and that the League of nations (Article X) would bring the U.S. into future wars.
3. The Treaty was rejected, and America signed a separate peace with Germany.

Its a long winded attempt that covers 3 major conflicts from around the world.

Another cause of WWI was that war had not been fought in so long (last war was Franko-Prussian War that lasted for about 6 days) that they thought that was was heroic and a way to prove one's manliness.

People actually ran to the recruitment stations and some people killed themselves because they were too old to fight. Also, the British had this 'we must fight like gentlemen' so they promoted General Haig as the commander of all of their forces.

He commanded the battle of the Somme in which millions of people were killed and Haig was then promoted. Haig doubted the ability of a machine gun to stop a charging horse, thought that his troops were too stupid to fight during the night and considered surprise attacks 'unsporting.'

Reportedly, Haig's signal to storm the enemy trenches was to run out into the No-man's land and kick a soccer ball into the German trenches. He also ran out into the no-man's land in the middle of a battle to play soccer because it was considered 'a way to show British spirit.'

Finally, Haig said that the Germans were inferior because they did not know how to play soccer.
