Well according to blade runner he thought his girlfriend was a burglar, so on valentines day, he decided to shoot her at night.
The casual thing you do to your girlfriend who you mistake for a burglar.

It's tragic. In my opinion it was an accident as she snuck into his house at 3 a.m., knowing that he had a stash of guns and that he is paranoid, and he shot her in the dark while he had the chance.
