tapping is disconnecting your modem
you don't use a program to do it, you use your fingers

Well my modem is far away, so it doesn't work like that.

tapping is where you pull the cable from the modem disconnecting your internet connection
if you didn't do it that way then your internet connection is just slow but thats the easiest way
