If you've already deduced that the meaning of life is that to seek the meaning of life, would not that task already be complete? I think you may have worded it a little strangely, though I do believe I understand your point. You suggest that our "purpose" per se, is that of the active search for knowledge of our origin and the universe around us?

It doesn't have to be the search for knowledge. Just any goal is why we live. If your goal is to simply survive, there you have it, a purpose, a meaning, you just want to live. If a person no longer wants to live, or has no goals they want to see through, there comes death. The purpose of life is to live basically. There's no set purpose. If there was set purpose we'd be zombies of some sort.
