My guess is they copied Night of the Living Dead, the original movie of course.
I mean c'mon, noone really survives and the zombies grow bigger and stronger in each movie, and then finally they get to the point where they can think and talk to each other. Not to mention the only way to really destroy them would be to blow them up or rip them to pieces because they were practically invincible.
