    What is a DLL?

I know its a dynamic link library or something like that, but Im a little confused on how one is used, what's in them, and why they aren't simply executables?
    Could Someone plz explain.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

    B. That was a lousy answer

Luckily I found out on my own what a .dll no thanks you guys and shit answers like that.

To anyone who wants to know:

A DLL is a Dynamic Linked Library. DLL are resource files for executing programs. So the flow of execution can shift quickly between the .dll and the executing program. What's more important it that .dll's can be shared by multiple processes or programs. This makes them a very powerful tool between sharing information between to programs. .dll can also be forcefully injected into a process and hook certain function and even read keyboard input from inside that process. This is why .dll are such important tools for gamehacking.
Lastly a .dll can not run itself. Another program has to call it for it to run so injecting it would set a call to run that .dll along with the rest of the program.

Not just resources but 'anything'... same thing as an exe but needs to be 'hosted'. and flow between exe and dll being slow? never heard of that one! it's basically seamless

Anyway.. same reason why you start putting stuff into classes is the reason why you start putting stuff in DLLs.. It just makes sense from an architecture perspective. If you for instance take your encryptor program and want to use it with different front-ends (or even allow other to use it) putting it in dll would be the way to go. or another simple scenario is a plugin for something like photoshop/3dsmax etc. These are not meant to run on their own, but provide new functionality.

for any larger project i RARELY have just 1 exe, but split things up in logical chunks and stick those in DLLs

Opps sry. did I write can't I meant to write can :L.... edit.

Cool. So add-ons and plug-ins are .dll'd too? So when I get a flash plugin for my browser or something that would be a .dll?

That really depends on the application you 'plug in' to. But let's take an example that is really close to us: Olly. Plugins written for Olly are DLLs.

basically any 'chunk of code' that is designed to be used by another process is usually a dll

Think of it as the extras that go together with you pc when you purchase one

DLLs are basically wrappers for code to be executed by a main process
In these parts codes are malicious
